The southwest suburbs are full of qualified contractors that can do kitchen and bath remodeling work, and we are happy to partner with your contractor transform your vision into reality. If you are using your own person, we strongly recommend you do the appropriate amount of homework before selecting a contractor.
We’ve heard from many customers over the years that had very unfortunate outcomes with contractors that did not deliver on their commitments. These situations typically result in project delays, cost overruns and significant frustration.
Starting a home remodeling project is an exciting step toward transforming your space—but it can also feel overwhelming. Beyond designing your dream kitchen or bathroom and selecting the perfect materials, finding the right contractor is a crucial decision. We work with seven dedicated installation crews who are experts in their craft. However, we also understand that some homeowners have their own preferred contractors.
We’re more than happy to collaborate with them to bring your vision to life! That said, we want to ensure you have a smooth and successful remodel by helping you make an informed choice when selecting a contractor. Here are some key considerations:
Check Online Reviews
Websites like Google, Yelp, and more can provide insight into a contractor’s reputation. Just keep in mind that online reviews often reflect extreme experiences, whether good or bad.
Ask for References
A reputable contractor should be able to provide references from past clients. Talking to previous customers can give you a better understanding of their work quality and professionalism.
Get a Clear Scope of Work
A well-documented scope of work ensures that all parties have a shared understanding of what the project includes and helps prevent surprises later.
Look at Their Work
Skilled craftsmen take pride in their projects and should have a portfolio of completed work to show you. Never be afraid to ask for pictures.
Verify Insurance
Make sure your contractor carries proper insurance. This protects you, your home, and the contractor in case of accidents or damage.
Understand
Permitting Requirements
If your project requires a permit, your contractor should be able to guide you through the process and provide necessary documentation like proof of insurance or bonding.
Consider a Bond
While not always necessary, requesting a bond can offer financial protection in case of contractor non-performance. Keep in mind that obtaining a bond carries a fee from most companies.
Be Wary of Payment Requests
While a deposit may be necessary to secure materials, contractors should not require full payment upfront. A structured payment plan based on project milestones is a good practice.
Waiver of Lien
Any contractor should have no problem providing a waiver of lien after completion of the project. This legal form essentially provides documentation that the contractor is paid in full for work performed.
